Community-based management strategies for biocultural diversity conservation

Free Prior and Informed Consent and Community Agreements

In the COMBIOSERVE field sites, following deliberate and locally-tailored processes of Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) with community members and leaders, agreements were signed between COMBIOSERVE partners and the communities where fieldwork is due to be carried out. These comprehensive agreements lay out the objectives, methods and outcomes of the project, and establish rules of conduct, methods for collaboration, community requirements and pathways for redress in the case of conflict.

As a contribution to the process of negotiation of community agreements, a document in Spanish that outlines the legal contexts, implications and processes required to ensure the Free Prior and Informed Consent of communities involved in the project was prepared by Global Diversity Foundation.
